Urushi Candle Set

£38

This item is currently out of stock

These limited edition candles are made from the refined wax of fruit from the Urushi tree. The wick, made by wrapping a dried reed around a washi paper cylinder, gives the candle a tall intense flame and generates minimal soot and smoke.

Dating back to the 17th Century, Japanese candles (warosuku) were often made from Urushi before candles made from the oil of the Japanese wax tree replaced them. Kew Garden’s ‘Economic Botany Collection’ stocks traditional Japanese candles made from Urushi (John Quin's second batch of collections).

These warosuku have been made for us by hand in the Takazawa atelier in Japan, using traditional methods. Takazawa are the only remaining manufacturer of candles using Urushi.

This beautiful gift set also includes a candle holder.

Each candle is 8cm high with an average burn time of 50 minutes.
